Why FORTIFIED: insurance credits, grants and a stronger roof
FORTIFIED is a roofing standard from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS). A FORTIFIED roof goes on like a good new roof, with extra steps that help it stay on, and keep water out, when a storm hits the coast.

FORTIFIED is a program of IBHS. We’re a FORTIFIED Certified roofer.

We’re also GAF Certified, and offer GAF System Plus and GAF Silver Pledge warranties.
What it can do for you
A FORTIFIED roof may help with your homeowners insurance. What applies depends on your insurer, your policy and where your home is.
Insurance credits
The NC Department of Insurance says credits may be available for qualifying homes in the state’s beach and coastal areas. Ask your agent what your policy offers.
Strengthen Your Roof grants
Some coastal policyholders of the NC Insurance Underwriting Association can apply for a grant toward a FORTIFIED roof. Eligibility and amounts change, so check the program page.
Your certificate
Keep the FORTIFIED certificate with your house papers. It’s the proof your insurer and future buyers can check.
We’re roofers, not insurance agents, so we don’t advise on claims or coverage.
What goes into it
A sealed roof deck
The seams between the roof boards are sealed. If wind tears shingles off, water has a much harder time getting into the house.
Stronger fastening
The deck and roof edges are fastened to the standard’s tighter nailing rules, which help the roof stay put in high wind.
Edges and vents to match
Drip edge, starter shingles and roof vents meet the standard too, because wind often starts at the edges.
For a new FORTIFIED roof, we follow the IBHS requirements that apply to the project. More at fortifiedhome.org.
How a roof earns the FORTIFIED designation
- A free inspection. We look at your roof and talk through replacing it to the FORTIFIED standard.
- A certified roofer builds it. Only a FORTIFIED Certified roofer can install a roof for the designation. We’re certified.
- An independent evaluator checks the work. A certified FORTIFIED evaluator, not the roofer, confirms the roof meets the standard.
- IBHS issues the certificate. IBHS reviews the evaluator’s documentation and, if the home qualifies, issues a FORTIFIED Roof designation. It lasts five years.

GAF materials, built to the FORTIFIED standard
Certain GAF products meet FORTIFIED requirements, from the underlayment that seals the roof deck to the peel-and-stick starter strip along the edges.
We’re GAF Certified and FORTIFIED Certified, so we can build your FORTIFIED roof with GAF materials: a roof built to hold up to coastal storms, from a name you know. We’ll go over warranty options at your free inspection.

FORTIFIED roof questions
Does a FORTIFIED roof cost more?
Usually, yes, because of the added materials and steps. Ask us to price a standard roof and a FORTIFIED roof in your free estimate, so you can compare.
Can my current roof be made FORTIFIED?
The best time to plan for FORTIFIED is before a roof replacement, so the evaluator can document the work. Ask us what your home would need.
Will a FORTIFIED roof lower my insurance?
It may. Some insurers offer credits for FORTIFIED roofs on North Carolina’s coast. Your agent can tell you what your policy offers.
How long does the designation last?
Five years. To renew it, a certified evaluator confirms the home still meets the requirements.
