Before hurricane season: the roof checklist
Most of this you can do from the ground, and from the attic if it’s safe to go up there. Please stay off the roof and leave ladder work to a professional.
- Look at the roof from the ground. Note missing, lifted or curling shingles, and anything hanging loose.
- Check around pipes, vents and the chimney. Cracked pipe boots and loose flashing are common places for leaks to start.
- Clear the gutters and downspouts so heavy rain can drain away from the house.
- Trim branches that hang over the roof.
- Look in the attic after a heavy rain for stains or damp spots on the wood.
- Photograph your roof before the season starts, so you have a dated record of how it looked.
- Know your policy. Ask your agent about your hurricane deductible and what your coverage includes.
- Get a free inspection if anything looks off. We’ll show you photos of what we find.
After a storm
- Stay safe. Keep off the roof and away from downed power lines.
- Slow the water inside. Put buckets under drips and move what you can out of the way.
- Take photos of the damage, from the ground and inside the house.
- Call or text 910-902-0271 any time, day or night, for emergency help, including tarping.
- Get a free inspection with photos of what we find. Your insurer decides coverage.
